Indie Rock/Pop and Unconventional Covers
I always find it cool when an indie rock band covers an unexpected genre...primarily that of R&B/soul/Hip-Hop. Here are a couple that I find interesting (note that I say, "find interesting," but not necessarily "like"). And no, I did not include the Fray's cover of "Heartless" on this list.....
El Perro del Mar covering Aaliyah, covering the Isley brothers: "At Your best (You are Love)" This song is found on El Perro del Mar's 7" split single with Lykke Li. I love Aaliyah's version, but this is an interesting take on a great Isley Brothers track.
Imogen Heap covering MJ, "Thriller"
Good stuff , but I can't do the Thriller choreo to it. Nope, definitely not.
Arctic Monkeys covering Shirley Bassey, "Diamonds are Forever"
The sample sound familiar?
Other cool covers:
Iron & Wine covering the Four Tops: "Same Old Song"
Of Montreal and Janelle Monae covering Diana Ross: "Love Hangover" A live version; I love this song, so I would go nuts if I heard this live*
Interesting, but the originals top them without a doubt . Definitely would like to hear more covers of Motown singles though.
